Papers. 1931-1979.

Most of the papers date from the 1970s and relate to Walter Burley Griffin and Herbert's interest in building a Knitlock house at Malua Bay. They include newspaper cuttings on Griffin, 1964-1979; Knitlock notes and specifications; correspondence relating to Griffin, 1975-1979; and papers relating to the Walter Burley Griffin Memorial Design Competition in 1975. Earlier items are a printed Castlecrag estate plan, and 17 small printed perspectives of Griffin's designs at the U.P. Industrial and Agricultural Pavilion, Lucknow, India. The collection also includes a photograph album containing photos taken in the 1930s at Castlecrag depicting pre-development and early development views of the peninsula, scenes at the Griffins' house and Knitlock construction. Other photos dating from the 1970s include shots of houses designed by Griffin, the Oatlands Golf Club in Sydney and Herbert's property at Malua Bay.

Designer and manufacturer. Born Adelaide. Herbert came to Castlecrag, Sydney, on the invitation of Walter Burley Griffin in 1926 to help Griffin with the construction of Knitlock houses. Around 1934 Herbert established a company for the manufacture of playground and gymnasium equipment. Griffin, Walter Burley, 1876-1937

Walter Burley Griffin was an architect and landscape architect. Marion Mahony Griffin (1871-1962) was an architect who worked mainly as an architectural renderer. She was the first women to graduate, in 1894, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a degree in architecture.
